Transdermal or Topical Absorption

Is it possible for certain nutrients, chemicals or drugs to be absorbed through the skin? Yes most definitely. It’s not even debatable at this point. Sure there are some substances too big to be transported and processed through the layers of the skin, but many substances are absorbed and this is the way it’s always been. Take UV radiation radiation for example, it is so essential for the skin to be exposed to UV for the production of vitamin D. But the skin is not just a factory for vitamin D, there are other receptors as well.

The layers of skin are richly supplied with blood, lymph, fat and all the other components that are in the small intestines which we normally consider to be the main area for absorption of nutrients.

Have a look at this illustration of just the epidermis. In the first illustration, it looked like a solid mass where nothing is penetrable. But at you can see above, there are pathways around each cell. The epidermis is considered just a layer of dead cells, and it is only half a millimeter thick, but these cells still have receptor sites on the surface for many different pathways and processes. And it only gets more active as we move down into the dermis and subcutaneous layers, where the circulation increases and communication with the rest of the body happens.

The magic of living an intentionally natural life, is that you are aware that what you put on your skin is going to affect the entire body, including your mind. This is true for positive benefits as well as negative effects. If you put chemical products on your skin, those chemicals will have cause and effect inside your body as well as your skin. Instead, you can use your skin as the pathway to generalized health, while feeding it the right nutrients it needs to stay youthful and healthy.
